ABOUT US

Welcome to Ecogrove! a family-owned farm located in South Florida dedicated to growing Sweet Tsai Lychees, a new and unique variety of lychees found nowhere else in the world. Following our family passion for farming fine exotic tropical fruits we crossed paths with Dr. James Tsai, a retired agriculturalist, entomologist and professor emeritus of the University of Florida. Professor Tsai used all his expertise brought from China, where his family has been growing lychees for generations, to grow lychees at his local grove in Florida.

OUR PRODUCTS

EcoGrove’s main crop is the Sweet Tsai lychee. We also produce other varieties of lychees such as the Mauritius, Brewster, and Hak Ip. On a lesser scale, we also grow other tropical fruits such as mangoes, star fruit, pomelos, and papayas.

The lychee tree is an attractive and rare sub-tropical fruit tree that has a succulent red fruit. The Lychee fruit originated over 2000 years ago initially in the north tropical rainforests and mountain forests of Southern China. It is documented that there are still villages in Southern China today with lychee trees that are over 1000 years old.

The Lychee fruit is about 1½ to 2 inches in size, oval to rounded shaped and the bumpy skin is red in color. Once you peel the skin off, the crisp juicy flesh of a lychee fruit is white or pinkish, translucent and glossy like the consistency of a grape, but the taste is sweeter. Lychee Fruits have a slightly acidic sweetness and fresh taste with a wonderful fragrant flavor that everyone enjoys. Botanically, this exotic fruit belongs to the family of Sapindaceae and named scientifically as Litchi chinensis.

There are numerous lychee varieties with considerable confusion regarding their naming and identification. The same type grown in different climates may produce a totally different fruit. Lychee classification can also have different synonyms in various parts of the world. Most types grown in the United States were imported from China.

In Florida, the lychee production is based on several types, including Mauritius, Brewster, and Hak Ip. The lychee we grow in our grove is a hybrid of these varieties that combines all their best characteristics and produce early blooming with abundant large, red fruit of very sweet taste.

We called this unique lychee the “Sweet Tsai” in honor of Dr. James Tsai, the man who developed this unique hybrid variety. Dr. Tsai grew the trees on a 30-year hybridization period with exquisite attention to detail in order to produce healthy trees and a unique fruit taste.

Our Sweet Tsai Lychees are harvested, and hand packed, the same day we ship them to our distributors or sell them at our several retail points of sale in South Florida. Quality and freshness are our main concerns.

By buying directly from Florida farmers you are supporting the conservation of healthy farm practices, keeping a fair market value for our fruit that will guarantee our ability of offering natural and free of pesticides fruit for you and future generations.
